Today we had our cultural heritage parade. First we learned about a lot of different countries. Then we found out about our own cultural backgrounds. We chose which country we wanted to make a float for, for our parade. Then we started to make our floats. We started with a plain box and decorated it with things that we learned about our cultural heritage. Finally we brought in wagons to put our floats on for the parade. Oh what fun we had while we were learning!
What do you think? 1) What countries are you from? 2) Have you ever made a float before? 3) Have you ever been in a parade? On Monday we had our 2nd Grade Market Day. Everyone made a good or provided a service in our class. We had money to spend that we had earned from our behavior for the last two weeks. Some of the things that we made were paper masks, drawings, jewelry, rubber band bracelets, clay sculptures and book marks. We also had some games like bowling, knock down, and the shell game. The other 2nd grade class, Ms. Young's class, came to our market to buy our goods and services. We also went to their market to buy goods and services. We really liked the pencils with the duct tape flower on the top and the flags that sold out really quickly. We liked the bracelets, necklaces and head bands. One of our favorite services was the tattoo stand. It was so cool having and going to the markets.
We learned a lot about economics. We learned about how to use money to buy less expensive things first. If we didn't, we would run out of money really fast. We learned that if you are a seller you should make a lot of products so that you don't sell out so quickly. We learned that signs help to attract attention and tell the price, but buyers need to pay attention to what the sign really says. Having our market let us learn first hand what economics is all about! What do you think? 1) Have you ever made a mistake when you're shopping? 2) What was your favorite thing to buy if you were at the market? 3) If you had a market what would you make and sell? 4) Have you ever been to a market? We learned about different landforms by doing research from books and the internet. After we wrote what we learned we made our landforms out of home-made play dough. Some parents made the play dough for us. We typed our reports on the laptops. Then we painted our landforms. What do you think? 1) What type of landforms are around you? 2) Which landform do you think is the coolest and why? 3) Have you ever made anything from home-made play dough? Second graders from Vermont had fun learning about their cultural heritage. We discovered that although we are all Americans our background is different. We also learned that different cultures contribute to our own culture. As the culminating activity we had a parade with floats that were decorated from various countries. Take a look at the pictures from our parade! The second grade learned about economics by having a "market." Student/s decided whether they wanted to provide a good or service at our market. They then worked hard to produce their goods and plan the services. Signs were made and prices were determined before the market. On the day of the market Ms. Young's second grade class, along with special guests, came to our market. Our class also had the opportunity to be the consumers at Ms. Young's market. The students earned an income by following rules in the classroom. Fun was had by all! Check out these pictures! |
